SOURCE TO SEA

Freshwater and ocean ecosystems are closely linked, yet both face growing pressure from human activity.

To protect them, we support a source to sea approach that encourages coordinated water management, from rivers to coastlines, through collaboration and shared responsibility.

OUR  WATER SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGY

PROTECTING WATER

By 2030, DP World is committed to investing over $5 million in WASH programmes to reach over 250,000 people.

We work globally and locally to ensure communities have fair access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene. Our partnerships prioritise gender equality, strengthen climate resilience, and focus on long-term, innovative solutions.

To help employees, communities, and schools better understand safe water, sanitation, and hygiene, we’re sharing practical advice from the DP World education platform , giving people the tools to create their own water solutions.

We’re connecting our employees to our global water initiatives through partnerships, campaigns, and education programmes. Building their knowledge and empowering them to take part in water-focused solutions.

Our Sustainable Water Conservation and Management Strategy strengthens how we use and protect water across our operations. It embeds clear stewardship principles into our approach to water quality and conservation across the business.

THE IMPACT OF OUR WATER SUSTAINABILITY PROJECTS

Across our global operations, we’re taking practical steps to protect water resources by reducing consumption, improving efficiency, and supporting healthier marine ecosystems.

    Restoring mangroves

Puná Island, Ecuador, is crucial for water sustainability, biodiversity, and climate resilience, and is where we partner with the CALISUR Foundation to plant mangrove seedlings.

    Tackling plastic

Near DP World Antwerp Gateway, we've partnered with Natuurpunt to implementing a Source-To-Sea approach to safeguard and restore a vital waterway, protecting it from plastic pollution.

  • Clean sustainable water pouring into hands

    Transforming lives

In Niassa Province, Mozambique, we collaborate with WaterAid to enhance WASH facilities at three healthcare centres and communities. Solar-powered water facilities improve access and ensure a clean supply.

    WATER, SANITATION, AND HYGIENE

Water-related challenges, like extreme weather and rising sea levels, can destabilise communities and result in health hazards, causing approximately 829,000 deaths annually (WHO, 2022).

We know that building the resilience of infrastructure and the capacity of local communities is critical. We are aiming for a net positive water impact in 10 water-scarce basins, ensuring positive contributions to water access, quality, and quantity.

    CLIMATE ACTION

Freshwater and marine ecosystems are fundamental to human wellbeing and society. They influence the air we breathe, provide food security, and create liveable conditions on Earth through carbon storage and heat absorption.

Addressing societal challenges requires a holistic approach recognising the intricate interconnectivity between the land and maritime economies. As a key leader in the Sustainable Blue Economy, we aim to leverage the trade sector's unique position for scaling climate action and promoting resilience through data-driven actions.

    SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

    Clean Water and Sanitation

We’re helping communities thrive by making freshwater access a priority. Aligned with UN SDG 6, our work supports clean water and sanitation through WASH projects, especially in areas where water is scarce. By strengthening local systems, we’re building long-term resilience and improving lives.

    Life Below Water

As champions of the Sustainable Blue Economy, we support UN SDG 14 by protecting marine ecosystems and reducing our impact on oceans. Through partnerships and data-driven action, we’re restoring biodiversity and helping the ocean thrive now and in the future.
